FRIDAY PICK # 1: JERRY BUTLER AT THE BLU'J'S AT THE HERITAGE CENTER
With the Blu-J’s, which perform at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend tonight, Jerry Butler has put together a group of pickers that circle around his voice with the expertise of seasoned bluegrass vets. Mandolin player Barron Rogers, bassist Lee Chapman and banjo player Derek Vaden have almost as much experience as Butler, and they make his ongoing experience as a bluegrass musician all the sweeter, he told The Daily Times last summer: “We’re doing music that we love and like — a lot of the stuff we grew up on,” Butler said. “Gosh, we just have a lot of fun with it. Although it is my group, we are a group effort, and I can do things like I want to do them now. People coming out to the show are going to hear a good family-oriented bluegrass show. We’ll do some bluegrass tunes folks are familiar with, and some they’re not. We’ll go back and do some old country tunes they probably remember. And we include some gospel music, which is important to us. It’s a variety, and it’s entertaining.”
